MICROLOAN FOUNDATION USA

The MicroLoan Foundation (MLF) is an international development organization that reduces poverty and inequality by providing microfinance services to impoverished women living in remote rural areas in sub-Saharan African countries.

MicroLoan does this by providing small loans, specialized business training and ongoing personal mentoring support enabling women to start their own small businesses. MicroLoan also facilitates savings and financial planning so women can work their own way out of poverty for the long-term. The organization provides a hand-up not a hand-out in a self-sustainable way.

MicroLoan helps women only. Since 2002 it has helped over 170,000 women start small sustainable businesses and had a positive impact on over 850,000 dependents. We work throughout Malawi and Eastern Zambia. MLF facilitates independence rather than dependency, providing women with the opportunities to flourish and capitalize on their own entrepreneurial ambitions.

The MicroLoan Foundation USA is part of the larger MicroLoan family. We have offices in the UK and Australia, as well as headquarters in Malawi and Zambia. We employ more than 170 local people in Africa, who work throughout our 26 branch offices helping more than 30,000 marginalized women each year.

WHOLE PLANET FOUNDATION ®

Whole Planet Foundation is a Whole Foods Market foundation that funds poverty alleviation worldwide where the company sources products. The nonprofit’s mission is to empower the poor living in developing-world communities with microcredit and the chance to create or expand a home-based business and lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

In 2005, Whole Planet Foundation partnered with Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus and his organization Grameen Trust and began supporting microfinance programs with projects in Costa Rica and Guatemala. Since then, the foundation has partnered with Grameen-type microfinance institutions in 55 additional countries.

As of May 2013, Whole Planet Foundation has committed more than $37 million globally to microlending programs and has supported the empowerment of more than 282,000 individuals through micro-entrepreneurship, benefiting more than 1.6 million people with a chance for a better life.

In the U.S., Whole Planet Foundation partners with Grameen America in Indianapolis, New York, Omaha, Charlotte, Los Angeles and Oakland.

MICROLOAN FOUNDATION AND WHOLE PLANET FOUNDATION
GIVE OPPORTUNITIES IN MALAWI

Whole Planet Foundation is funding microcredit in Malawi where Whole Foods Market® sources Whole Trade® vegan sugar. With $450,000 in support for MicroLoan Foundation, the foundation is partnering with a like-minded institution focused on redirecting international aid. This provides the rural poor with access to financial services, with the intention of establishing a sustainable mode of increasing participation by the very poor in the economy and providing jobs to rural populations.

Leaders in the microfinance sector have moved toward an approach that focuses on urban clients and limited outreach to the very poor. Through our partnership with MicroLoan Foundation, Whole Planet Foundation is able to focus on a sustainable pro-poor methodology, providing access to credit in rural communities in Malawi. This group-based lending to women throughout the southern part of the country has an average loan size of $105.
