Planned Giving

In Malawi:

  • 90% of the population are subsistence farmers
  • 76% of the population live on less than $2 per day.
  • 42% of the population live on less than $1 per day.
  • 1 million people live with HIV/AIDS



MLF USA encourages donors to make both outright and deferred gifts to respond to the needs of the poorest women in sub-Saharan Africa. MLF USA is organized under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The types of deferred gifts MLF USA will accept include bequests; immediate and deferred payment charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts; charitable lead trusts; retained life estates, gifts of life insurance policies and proceeds, gifts of retirement fund accounts, and such other gift arrangements as the Board of Directors may from time to time approve. All programs shall be subject to the oversight of the Executive Director and Board.

  1. Overriding Philosophy.The policy of MLF USA is to inform, serve, guide, or otherwise assist donors who wish to support MLF USA activities through a planned gift.
  2. Resources.With respect to the acceptance of all gifts other than cash or securities, the advice of outside legal counsel will be sought as appropriate to the gift acceptance situation.
  3. Interests of the Donor.MLF USA will endeavor, at all times, to faithfully implement the stated and/or written philanthropic goals of the donor.
  4. Independent Legal Advice.MLF USA shall encourage the donor to discuss the proposed gift with independent legal and/or tax advisors of the donor’s choice and shall stress the importance of such counsel where the gift being considered is a planned, irrevocable gift
  5. Acceptable Gift Types.Donors may choose to make outright or deferred gifts or both. MLF USA accepts the following types of gifts:
    a. Cash
    b. Tangible personal property
    c. Securities
    d. Real estate
    e. Oil, gas and mineral interests
    f. Bargain sales
    g. Life insurance
    h. Charitable Gift Annuities (immediate and deferred)
    i. Charitable Remainder Trusts
    j. Charitable Lead Trusts
    k. Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designations
    l. Bequests
    m. Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations
  6. Prior Approval of Specific Gift Types.Gifts other than cash, publicly traded securities and insurance policy proceeds are subject to advance approval by the Executive Director or designee, and may require the completion of specific appraisal and disclosure reports prior to acceptance. This provision applies to gifts offered during the donor’s lifetime as well as through bequests or other testamentary vehicles.
  7. Restricted Gifts.MLF USA has a policy to meet the needs of those donors who request that their gifts be permanently restricted. MLF USA will not accept gifts that are inconsistent with or outside the scope of our Mission.
  8. Sale of Gift Property.In almost all cases, gifts of personal or real property will be liquidated by MLF USA immediately after transfer.
  9. Recognition. Those who have made a deferred gift to MLF USA are eligible to be recognized in the Legacy Society.
